ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's golf team recorded the lowest score in the final round of the Cornell Invitational to climb four places in the standings and finish second in the 15-team field. With an 11-over 863 over the three rounds, the Big Green held off St. Joseph's by two strokes, but came up short of Yale, which boasted a 13-under 839 to win the tournament.
Freshman
Mark Turner wrapped up a terrific collegiate deubt as one of just three players to break 70 today, carding a 2-under 69 to earn a tie for third place in the individual standings at 4-under overall. Yale's Eion Leonard and Siena's Jared Nelson ended the day tied atop the leaderboard, two strokes ahead of Turner, with Leonard winning the playoff by sinking a birdie on the second playoff hole.
The Big Green found the front nine to be a bit easier to navigate compared to the back nine at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University as the six golfers combined for 15 birdies over those nine holes while collecting just three after the turn. Turner had the most consistent day with 14 pars while picking up birdies on the fifth, sixth and 13th holes with a lone bogey on the third.
Senior
John Lazor nearly matched Turner with a 1-under 70 with three birdies and two bogey to tie finish up with a 3-over 216, tying for 14th overall with sophomore captain
Jason Liu who shot even par today with four birdies and four bogeys.
The lone player to score better on the back nine today was freshman
Charles Petrie with a 74 (+3). After bogeying the first four holes, he settled in and dropped birdies on 8 and 9 to enter the turn at 2-over, then played the back at 1-over with a birdie to his credit.
Dartmouth had another player join Turner in the top 10 as sophomore
Sam Ohno placed seventh with a 212 (-1), including his 3-over 74 today that featured a trio of birdies. No one scored better on the par-4 holes all weekend (2-under par), and only Temple's John Barone, who tied with Turner in third place, sank more birdies than Ohno over the three rounds (16-15).
The Big Green return to the Upper Valley to compete next weekend, hosting the Quechee Club Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday in Quechee, Vermont.
