QUECHEE, Vt. — Dartmouth senior
John Lazor played the back nine at the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge at 2-under par thanks to a pair of birdies, helping him move into a tie for 12th at the end of the first round with a 74 (+2). The host Big Green finished the day at the par-72, 6,671-yard Lakeland course at the Quechee Club in ninth place with a 19-over 307 among a tightly clustered 12-team field, led by Cornell with a 297 (+9).
Lazor began the day with a bogey on the first hole, as did all but one of the eight Dartmouth golfers competing today. By the end of the front nine, the senior had four bogeys and five pars. But after the turn, he made five consecutive pars before ripping off back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16, then closed with two more pars to conclude his round just outside the top 10.
Freshman
Charles Petrie also had two birdies on the day, closing each nine with one as the rookie ended the day tied for 21st at 4-over par. Outside of a disastrous 10th hole, sophomore captain
Jason Liu had a solid day, but walked off the course with a 6-over 78. Although he played the final eight holes at 1-under, he will enter the second and final round tomorrow in a tie for 43rd place.
Also contributing to the Big Green score was sophomore
Sam Ohno with a 79 (+7), tying for 52nd. Last week's top finisher at Cornell, freshman
Mark Turner, struggled throughout the round, carding an 85.
Three Dartmouth golfers played as individuals, headed up by junior
Will Bednarz who matched Lazor's 2-over 74 thanks to four birdies, double that of any of his teammates. Senior
Reed Russ also had a solid performance with a 76 (+4) while playing the final 11 holes at even par.
Cornell has a three-stroke lead on three other Ivy League schools — Brown, Harvard and Princeton — while the 12 teams are separated by just 13 strokes. The Bears' Drew Powell and the Tigers' Evan Quinn are tied atop the leaderboard at 3-under par, one stroke ahead of the Crimson's Grant Fairbaim.
Play will begin on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
