PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's golf team wrapped up the first round of the Princeton Invitational at the Springdale Golf Club in 11th place with a team score of 316 (+28). Sophomore
Moon Cheong provided the Big Green's low score of the day with 6-over 78, tying for 34th place.
Penn State finished the day atop the leaderboard with a 294 (+6), three strokes ahead of Georgetown. But it was the Hoyas' Christina Parsells who carded the best score among the 75 golfers on the par-72, 6,100-yard course today, boasting a 5-under 67, four strokes ahead of Mary Shin and Rina Jung of Penn, which is in third at 10-over par.
Cheong got off to a rough start with bogeys on each of the first three holes. A birdie on the par-3 sixth was one of just four on the day for the Dartmouth squad, but she finished the front nine 4-over par. She steadied her game on the back nine, however, making par on seven of the nine holes with just a pair of bogeys to complete her round.
Junior
Kristen Soh and freshman
Kristen Chen played similar golf for the 18 holes as both reached the turn at 4-over with five pars and four bogeys. Soh added six more pars on the back to post a 79 (+7), tying Chen in 42nd place. But Chen had a birdie to her credit on the par-5 12th to go with five more pars.
The final score that went to the Big Green total belonged to sophomore
Julianne Strauch with an 8-over 80. She matched Soh with 11 pars, tying for the team lead, but a double-bogey on 17 dropped her one stroke behind her Kristen teammates.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Lees had Dartmouth's best score on the front nine at even par, thanks to birdies on the seventh and eighth holes. But she struggled on the back nine and ended up with a 9-over 81 in a tie for 55th.
The Big Green will tee off the second and final round tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. starting with Lees in the first group.
