PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's golf team improved by two strokes from the first round to the second, but dropped one place in the standings of the Princeton Invitational to finish the weekend in 12th place with a 630 (+54) at Springdale Golf Club. Penn State posted the low round on both days to claim the title with a 12-over 588, eight strokes ahead of Georgetown in the 12-team field.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Lees led the Big Green on Sunday, shaving five strokes from her opening-round score to card a 76 (+4) today. The rookie from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, was 2-over on each nine, but reached that total in vastly different ways. Beginning on the 10th hole, she made par on eight of the first nine, suffering only a double bogey on 11. The front nine was much more volatile with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on her final hole, but also back-to-back birdies on 6 and 7.
Overall, Lees tied for 42nd among the 75 competitors, equaling sophomore teammate
Moon Cheong with a 13-over 157. Cheong also had two birdies on the day while carding a 7-over 79. The only other Dartmouth birdies belonged to freshman
Kristen Chen on the 336-yard, par-4 14th and sophomore
Julianne Strauch on the 296-yard, par-4 sixth. Chen matched Cheong with a 79 (+7) while Strauch posted an 80 (+8), though recovered after a rough start to play the final 12 holes at just 1-over.
Chen wrapped up her weekend tied for 45th, one stroke behind Lees and Cheong, while Strauch tied for 57th with a 160 (+16).
Yale's Ami Gianchandani claimed medalist honors thanks to a 5-under 67 on Sunday, making up seven strokes following the first round of play. She ended up at 3-under par (141), beating out Princeton's Emma Zhao (-1) and a pair of golfers at even par, including the opening-round leader Christina Parsells of Georgetown who stumbled to 5-over on the day.
The Big Green will be back in action in two weeks at the Brown Invitational on Oct. 14-15.
