ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth volleyball suffered a 3-0 loss (17-25, 17-25, 19-25) to league leader Cornell on Friday evening.
Â
Sophomore Nicole Liddle led with 9.5 points, nine kills and nine digs, while three players had three blocks each: senior Carly Tower, sophomore Emma Moffet and junior Tola Akinwumi. Sophomore Bella Hedley had a team-leading 19 digs and freshman Makenzie Arent was first with 10 assists.
"I thought we battled, but Cornell's tempo was causing us trouble at all times," head coach Gilad Doron said. "We will need to be more disciplined both offensively and defensively to give ourselves a chance to win at Columbia tomorrow."
Â
The teams were evenly matched in the early parts of the first set, trading points and the lead until a 5-1 Cornell (11-2, 4-0) run gave the home team a 12-7 edge. The Big Red remained ahead but kills by Tower and freshman Jojo Brown chipped away at their lead (18-14). Another 7-3 Cornell rally gave it the win (25-17).
Â
The Big Red took control of the second set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The Big Green took away their momentum after a timeout and went on a 6-2 run, capitalizing on a handful of Cornell errors to get within three (11-8). Dartmouth (5-8, 1-3) kept pressuring, had some huge blocks along the way and made it a two-point set following three consecutive kills by Brown (19-17). The Big Red took the last six points to win the set (25-17). Â
Â
Dartmouth had a strong start to the third and, following back-to-back aces by Arent and a Cornell error, had a 3-2 advantage. The Big Red moved ahead, but the Green remained in the running and, thanks to kills by Arent, Brown and Liddle and a pair of aces by Hedley, were only down by three (14-11). Cornell pulled away (22-16), but Dartmouth stayed in it. Moffet had a huge block and Arent had another ace before the Big Red ended it (25-19).
Â
Dartmouth will take on Columbia at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
