HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth volleyball outlasted Harvard at Leede Arena, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 32-30) on Friday evening.
Â
Not only is this the first time that the Big Green have defeated the Crimson twice in one season, but it is also the first time since 2009 that Dartmouth has beat Harvard in straight sets.
Â
"We played together from beginning to end," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "Defeating Harvard twice in the same year is big for us. We talked all week about things we wanted to work on and I'm glad they stuck with it and believed in one another. Makenzie ran smooth offense and Grace played perhaps her best game since she arrived here. We were hitting well, digging well, and we got contributions from so many different players, which was good to see. Hopefully we'll start the second round well and finish stronger than the first round."
Â
Freshman
Grace Wiczek led the team with 19 points and 18 kills, while classmate
Makenzie Arent had a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. Sophomore
Francesca Meldrum had four of the team's 11 blocks.
Â
Dartmouth (6-11, 2-6) had four points in a row from kills by Wiczek, Meldrum and junior
Elise Petit and an ace by sophomore
Nicole Liddle to tie things up at 20-20. The Green continued on that hot streak and some Wiczek kills allowed the home team to pull even further ahead (23-20). After getting to match point and allowing one more Crimson point, a Harvard (4-13, 2-6) error gave set one to the Green (25-22).
Â
Tied at 14-14, a Dartmouth run following kills by Wiczek, senior
Carly Tower and Petit put Dartmouth ahead, 18-15. The Crimson got back within one, but Dartmouth came on even stronger at the end and a 6-1 run thanks to kills by Liddle and Wiczek and a handful of Harvard errors made it a 2-0 match (25-19).
Â
The visitors got the first point on the board, but some big kills by Wiczek and a few Harvard errors gave the lead to Dartmouth (4-2). The Crimson came alive and a 6-1 rally put them up, 10-6. A number of errors on both sides of the net, a Wiczek kill and another ace by Liddle made it a one-point set with Harvard clinging to the lead (15-14). After tying the score at 16-all, the Crimson went on a 5-1 run to get close to a victory (21-17). Kills by Wiczek and Arent tied the score at 24-24 and the teams proceeded to tie six more times before Dartmouth got the win (32-30).

The Big Green will be back on Saturday to host New Hampshire in its penultimate non-conference match of 2019.
