HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Dartmouth volleyball team pushed Colgate to the brink in all three sets before the Raiders closed out a hard-fought sweep, 3-0 (25-20, 28-26, 26-24), in the finale of the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament at Cotterell Court on Sunday, Sept. 13.
Zori Brown paced the Big Green offensively, racking up 10 kills and nine digs for 12.0 points. Riley Imamura was right behind her with 10 kills, eight digs and a block for 11.5 points. Jaida Cekic did a bit of everything, piling up 11 digs, six kills and three block assists for 8.5 points, and Raeli Smith was efficient off the bench, hitting .571 on five kills to go with three aces for 9.0 points. Sophia Gagnepain directed the offense with 17 assists, while Elle McCreery and Julia York each chipped in a trio of block assists.
The Big Green won the ace battle 7-2 and finished with a slight edge in blocks, 6-5, but couldn't overcome 50 Colgate kills across the three sets.
Colgate never trailed for long in the opening set, using a mid-set surge to build enough cushion to hold off a late Dartmouth push. The Big Green got within two points twice in the final stretch, but the Raiders closed it out, 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair that Dartmouth appeared to have in hand. Behind kills from Brown, Cekic and Smith, the Big Green built a 19-16 lead and later led 24-21, but Colgate would not go away. The Raiders scored six of the final eight points to escape with a 28-26 win and a 2-0 match lead.
Set three followed a similar script. Dartmouth trailed early but clawed back to tie it at 23-23 on a Smith ace, only for Colgate to close out the match on a 3-1 finish, sealing the sweep at 26-24.
