HANOVER, N.H. – Two fourth-quarter goals by Cornell helped the Big Red escape Hanover with a 3-2 win Saturday against the Dartmouth field hockey team in its final game of the season.
Â
Senior
Carmen Braceras scored in her final game, while junior
Tatum Schultz netted the other tally for the Big Green (4-13, 0-7) at Chase Field, while also collecting an assist.
Â
Both goals in the final period came off the stick of the Big Red's (10-7, 4-3) Claire Jones on corner plays.
"The team fought hard today, but fell short in the end," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "We certainly had our moments, and fortunately, we capitalized and had two beautiful field goals. The disappointing part was that we weren't able to create more corners, which also allow us more opportunities for goals. Cornell did create those chances and finished, and that was the difference."
Â
Although she's credited with the loss, the Big Green's most important player was sophomore goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci who made seven saves, with a majority coming on point-blank corner attempts from the visitors. Cornell's Maddie Henry stopped five shots at the other end of the field for the win.
Â
Schultz's tally was an unassisted one thanks to a great individual effort in the midfield before depositing her shot into the lower right corner. She also picked up the lone helper on the Braceras goal, giving her a three-point afternoon in the last game of 2019.
Â
Caroline Ramsey scored the first red goal of the day nine minutes into the third quarter.
After the game, the five members of the Class of 2020 were honored during Senior Day ceremonies. Those five players who played in their final game on Saturday were Braceras,
Katie Spanos,
Jocelyn Wulf,
Maddie Donahue and
Katie Persin.
