PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore
Nicole Liddle had a double-double in Dartmouth volleyball's 3-1 loss to Penn (17-25, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25) on Saturday.
Liddle recorded 13 digs and 11 kills and was second with 11.5 points, while classmate
Jael Campbell had a career-high 13 points and 13 kills. Fellow sophomore
Bella Hedley registered 15 digs, and freshman
Makenzie Arent had 24 assists.
"Our team showed lots of heart and resilience today," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "We are playing better than we did a week ago and that is a good sign, but we have to clean up some of our unforced errors, which we will work on this week to prep for senior weekend."
Dartmouth (7-15, 2-10) came out strong in set one, jumping out to a 3-1 lead following back-to-back kills by sophomore
Emma Moffet, Liddle and freshman
Grace Wiczek. A small Penn (11-19, 4-8) rally put the home team ahead, but five ties followed until a 7-1 Quaker run put some distance between the teams (17-11). Some errors and a kill by sophomore
Francesca Meldrum allowed the Green to get within four (20-16), but Penn allowed just one more point before shutting the set down (25-17).
The start of the second also went in Dartmouth's favor, who soon had a 6-2 advantage thanks to kills by Campbell and blocks by Liddle, Meldrum and junior
Elise Petit. Penn caught up and tied it once, but the Green remained ahead following kills by Meldrum and Campbell (15-13). Three ties and two lead changes later, Dartmouth pulled ahead following three straight points to make it a 19-17 set. The Big Green continued to get stronger, winning the set by taking the last five points (25-19).
A handful of Penn errors at the beginning of the third put Dartmouth out in front (7-4). The Green remained comfortably ahead until three in a row for the Quakers made it a close set (11-10), but the threat was short-lived because kills by Petit and Arent and some errors by Penn got Dartmouth out of danger (16-12). The Quakers continued to pressure the Green, but never could get quite close enough until a 3-0 run put them out in front (20-19). After three ties, Penn won (25-22).
After being down, 5-3, at the start of the fourth, an 11-2 rally highlighted by three kills by Wiczek put Dartmouth ahead (14-7). The Quakers chipped away at that lead with four points of their own to get within three before another Green run increased their advantage (17-12). Penn won eight of the next 10 points to suddenly make the set a lot closer (20-20). The teams tied twice and Meldrum and Petit got one last kill each before Penn ended it (25-23).
Dartmouth will close 2019 next week with three home matches. First up: Merrimack on Wednesday evening.
