HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth's defense clamped down and held Maine to only nine points in the second half en route to a 57-41 win over the Black Bears Tuesday afternoon in front of a crazy Education Day crowd at Leede Arena. It was the first win for the Big Green over Maine since 2006, breaking a six-game losing streak against the team from Vacationland.
The Big Green snap their three-game losing streak and improve to 4-3, while the Black Bears fall to their second-straight Ivy League opponent and drop to 3-8. A recent struggle that Dartmouth corrected was getting to the free throw line. The Big Green shot 13-22 from the line after combining to shoot 2-6 in the previous two contests.
Dartmouth is now 4-2 on Education Day since the Tradition started in 2014 and have now won three straight in front of Upper Valley students.
Annie McKenna led the way once again with 18 points and five assists while playing all but 31 seconds.
Anna Luce was in double figures with 13 and grabbed seven rebounds, and
Katie Douglas tallied 10 points.
Elle Louie chipped in seven points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals and
Paula Lenart led the game with 11 rebounds to go along with five points.
"It was great to be back on our home court and pick up a win," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "Today we saw some of the lessons we've taken from our last few games come to fruition. We put the ball in basket, but more importantly was our defense. Holding Maine to nine points in the second half was critical and each win we've had this season was due to our defending and rebounding."
Dartmouth got off to a slow start as Maine built its lead to as many as 11 with 2:33 remaining in the second quarter. The gap was quickly closed as the Big Green finished the half on a 5-0 run with two free throws from Luce and back-to-back 3-pointers by Douglas to cut the deficit to 32-29 at the break.
The jubilant crowd of elementary schoolers from the Upper Valley gave the Black Bears fits and Dartmouth's defense began to play a major factor.
The Big Green held Maine to 2-13 shooting in the third and outscored the road team 15-5 in the quarter. Luce opened the half with five straight points to give Dartmouth a 34-32 lead at the 8:49 mark which the green and white never surrendered.
Defense was even better in the fourth as Dartmouth held Maine to only four points and scored 13 in the process. McKenna and Luce combined for eight of those points.
Dartmouth will look to continue its winning ways on Friday night at 7 p.m. at UMass Lowell.
