The Big Green made 10 3-pointers in the contest
LOWELL, Mass. – Dartmouth led by as many as 19 in the third quarter, but UMass Lowell stormed back to cut its deficit to five in the final minutes of the game. That was as close as the home team would get as the Big Green (5-3) would hang on for their second straight victory, 62-51. The River Hawks (3-8) see their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Four players scored in double figures for Dartmouth. Making her second start, Asha Taylor set a career-high with 12 points, sinking four 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Annie McKenna also had 12 for her seventh game in double-digits to go along with four assists and four rebounds. Katie Douglas finished with 11 points and four rebounds, and Paula Lenart posted 10 points, sinking 6-7 from the free throw line, and five boards. Elle Louie filled the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Big Green were 10-20 from beyond the arc, giving them their most made triples this season and highest percentage from deep.
"Our message to the team was to be external and create opportunities to extend a helping hand to one-another," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "It was a great game for Asha and Dougie to gain experience against full-court pressure and it was a solid game for Elle, Annie and Paula. We knew the run was coming in the second half and we're grateful that we were able to get a win."
After UML scored the first bucket of the game, Douglas answered with a 3-pointer and Lenart scored in the paint to give Dartmouth a 5-2 lead. The River Hawks then went on a quick 4-2 spurt, but the Big Green stayed on top. Douglas and Taylor sunk consecutive triples and Lenart capitalized on an old-fashioned 3-point play to make the score 16-11 after one.
Dartmouth built its advantage to 22-13 in the early going of the second. Douglas then drilled a 3-pointer and scored in the paint, extending the lead to 10 points at the 2:39 mark. McKenna and Kealy Brown closed the half with back-to-back trifectas to put the Big Green on top, 33-19.
Taylor knocked down two 3-pointers to give herself a new career high and the Big Green their largest lead of the night, 40-21, at 7:00. The River Hawks then went on a 12-4 run and closed their gap to 44-33 with 1:53 to go. Dartmouth regained its composure and finished the quarter with the final seven points to stay up, 49-35, heading to the fourth.
The River Hawks controlled the pace by outscoring Dartmouth 15-5 over the first eight minutes of the fourth, igniting their home crowd. That run closed UMass Lowell's gap to 49-54 with 2:39 left to play. The Big Green finally overcame the pressure from the home defense and converted their free throws down the stretch to take the win.
The Big Green are right back at it on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Leede Arena for the first-ever meeting with Texas State.
