DARTMOUTH (5-3)
at SOUTH FLORIDA (4-4)
Friday, Dec. 6, 2019 | 8 PM | ESPN3
Yuengling Center (10,411) | Tampa, Fla.
• Having lost the first two of five consecutive games on the road, Dartmouth looks to break back into the win column at South Florida, which won 24 games and took the CBI title last year.
• The Big Green came close to beating Georgia State on Tuesday, but the Panthers tied the game with 1.9 seconds left in regulation then outlasted Dartmouth in overtime, 83-80.
• Both
James Foye and
Chris Knight topped 20 points, the first Big Green teammates to do so in the same game since March 1.
• Foye matched career highs with 25 points and seven 3-pointers on the night, one of which came in the final minute of regulation that gave the Green a two-point lead at the time.
• Knight didn't merely score a season-high 23 points on 9-of-11 from the floor, he also led Dartmouth with nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
• Thanks to Foye, the Big Green finished the night with 12 triples, their fourth straight game in double digits from distance. The only longer streak in program history came in February of 2002.
• While the outside shooting has taken off, Dartmouth continued to struggle at the foul line, hitting just 10-of-17 (.588), dropping its season accuracy to 61.9 percent. The lowest recorded figure for a full campaign is 62.2 percent (1997-98).
• Joining Knight (12.9 ppg) and Foye (10.0) in double-figure scoring is
Aaryn Rai (10.9) thanks to leading the squad in accuracy from the floor (.574) and foul line (.783), plus tops the team in rebounding (6.8 rpg).
Series vs. South Florida
• The only previous meeting between these two schools on the hardwood resulted in a 90-54 blowout win for the Bulls on Dec 28, 1984.
• This is the third game for Dartmouth against a school from Florida this season, having defeated FGCU on Nov. 11 before falling to Jacksonville five days later.
• The Big Green are 14-9 against current American Athletic Conference schools, including 9-2 versus UConn, though the most recent game was a win over Wichita State 29 years ago.
Scouting the Bulls
• South Florida is coming off a 65-55 victory over a very good Furman squad after dropping its previous two at the Cayman Islands Classic.
• The magic number is 55 — Bulls opponents have scored exactly 55 in three of USF's four victories, and fewer than that in the other (41).
• South Florida is averaging 61.9 points a game and have only gone as high as 70 in the season opener.
• Two players have provided half of the offense in David Collins (14.6 ppg) and Laquincy Rideau (13.0), while the latter leads the Bulls with 28 assists and 21 steals.
• Michael Durr is USF's top rebounder at 6.6 per game with Justin Brown adding 5.1, not to mention a team-high 14 3-pointers made.
• The Bulls have struggled at the line even more than Dartmouth at 58.7 percent.
• Defense and rebounding have been South Florida's calling cards with nearly nine steals a night and 46 more offensive boards than its opponents leading to 50 more field goal attempts.
• Guiding the Bulls is Brian Gregory (Oakland '90), now in his third season following stints at Dayton and Georgia Tech. The former three-time all-conference guard and Academic All-American is 38-40 at USF entering this game and 286-220 in his 16th season as a head coach.
Overtime Not Overly Kind
Dartmouth had a victory snatched away at Georgia State when the Panthers hit a game-tying 20-footer with 1.9 seconds in regulation. In overtime, GSU was able to hold off the Big Green by three points, 83-80, dropping Dartmouth to 1-1 in overtime games this season. It was the 99th recorded Big Green game to go into overtime with the team 45-54 in those contests, but just 9-18 since the calendar flipped to the year 2000.
Best Start in 23 Years
Even with losses in its last two games, Dartmouth is off to its best start since the 1996-97 campaign when it was 7-1 after eight games. The Big Green went on to finish that season at 18-8 overall and 10-4 in the Ivy League, good for second place.
Oh Boy James Foye
James Foye was on target at Georgia State on Dec. 3, raining down seven 3-pointers while scoring 25 points, both matching career highs for the senior guard. His sixth triple gave the Big Green a two-point lead with 50 seconds to play in regulation, and his last one closed the gap in overtime to one with 13.3 seconds left, keeping Dartmouth's hopes of a victory alive. Alas, it was not to be, much like the last time he had seven treys and 25 points — Feb. 23, 2019 at Brown in a 68-65 defeat. Foye is currently 20th in the country in 3-point percentage (.488, 20-of-41).
Full Knight
Foye wasn't the only Dartmouth player lighting up the stat sheet at Georgia State as
Chris Knight also topped 20 points, going 9-of-11 from the field for a season-high 23. The junior forward not only put points on the board but also led the Green with nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks. It was his ninth career 20-point game, most among current Dartmouth players, and his 12.9 ppg leads the team as well.
10 or More Treys in 4 Straight
Actually, Dartmouth has hit at least 11 3-pointers in each of its last four games, just the third time the team has ever hit double digits in four straight but second time in the last two seasons. The first time came in 2002 when the Big Green had at least 10 in six consecutive contests.
Paying for Free Throws
For some reason, neither Dartmouth nor its opponents have had much success at the charity stripe this season. After hitting just 10-of-17 (.588) at Georgia State, the Big Green saw its season percentage fall to 61.9, which would be the lowest mark for the team in any season since the stat was recorded in 1964-65. Opponents, however, are having an even worse time at a woeful 55.8 percent, which I will say is the worst mark in Division I without actually looking it up because it would take a really long time to go through every team to find it since the NCAA doesn't keep track of it.
