HANOVER, N.H. – Unbeaten no more.
Â
The Dartmouth men's hockey team took down No. 2 Cornell, 2-1, Saturday night at Thompson Arena. The second-ranked Big Red (10-1-0, 7-1-0 ECAC Hockey) had been the last remaining unbeaten team in the nation, coming into the game at 10-0-0.
Â
That unblemished record is no more thanks to goals from
Jeff Losurdo and
Matt Baker and an otherworldly performance from Big Green (4-3-1, 4-2-1 ECAC Hockey) senior netminder
Adrian Clark and his 39 saves.
Â
Losurdo scored just 2:20 into the game on the power play to put the home team up a goal. The Red answered back with Morgan Barron notching his second of the season with just 12 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Â
That tie was short-lived once the puck was dropped again as Baker tallied his fourth of the season just 45 seconds into the frame for what proved to be the game winner.
Â
Clark made it stand up as such.
Â
The senior netminder had 32 saves in the final two periods, including 21 in the third alone. Several of those saves were of the spectacular variety, denying Cornell of the equalizer with diving blocks or an outstretched pad on several occasions.
Â
"Last night's game was an anomaly for us," Clark said. "This was more of who we are and our game. We really buckled down on defense and the penalty kill was incredible."
Â
Clark is referring to his team's 5-for-5 performance on the PK, holding the top-scoring team in the nation to just a single score despite 40 shots on goal and 74 attempts. Part of that was the team's 19 blocks to Cornell's seven, demonstrating a willingness to sacrifice for the betterment of the team.
Â
"That's the way we play," Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81 remarked. "We came out and played really well against a very good team and got the result we were looking for. We managed the game so well, especially in the third period with the lead. But we didn't sacrifice on our offensive opportunities just because we played so well in our own end."
Â
For Dartmouth, it marked the first win over a team ranked in the nation's top-3 since Jan. 20, 2018 when it edged No. 2 Clarkson, 3-2. The last three wins against team's ranked No. 2 in the polls have all been by a single goal.
Â
Dartmouth remains at home this week with a Thursday night tilt against non-conference Bentley. Puck drop between the Green and Falcons is set for 7 p.m.
Â
NOTES: Cam Strong picked up his first point of the season with the primary assist on Baker's goal. He has now factored into the game-winning goal at home against Cornell in consecutive seasons after scoring the GWG last year…Both of Losurdo's goals this season have come on the power play… Baker,
Will Graber and
Drew O'Connor are all tied for the team lead with four goals each.
