HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth took on Penn, the top team in the Ivy league Friday night, and fell, 60-44, at Leede Arena. The Big Green drop to 10-10 and 3-4 in the Ivy League, while Penn improves to 16-3 and 6-0 in the conference.
Â
Cy Lippold tied the game high with 19 points, sinking five 3-pointers.
Isalys Quinones finished with seven points and five rebounds, while
Kealy Brown had seven points, three rebounds and two steals.
Â
"Penn is a very talented team, top of our league for a reason and we talked all week about being able to score with them," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We were outmatched by them from a size standpoint and we needed to create high percentage shots and knock them down. We saw the game plan work in the first quarter and it dipped in the second. It's hard to take a dip against the best team in the league and get back into the game."
Â
After Penn scored the first two baskets to take a quick 4-0 lead,
Anna Luce got it started for the Big Green with a jumper and Lippold sank a 3-pointer to give Dartmouth a 5-4 advantage at the 7:45 mark. The Quakers then went on a 6-0 run to go up by five, but four straight points from Quinones and a straight-away triple by Lippold gave the Big Green a 12-10 lead with 3:39 to go in the first. Penn scored the final three points of the quarter to take a 13-12 advantage into the second.
Â
It was all Quakers in the second act. Penn outscored the Big Green 16-1 over the next seven-plus minutes to extend its lead to 29-13 with 2:43 to go until halftime. Dartmouth got a jumper underneath from Brown and a mid-range shot to go from
Asha Taylor in the final minute, but Penn held onto a 31-17 advantage at halftime.
Â
Lippold scored all 10 points for the Big Green in the third. Penn scored the first two baskets before Lippold drilled a 3-pointer, but the Quakers answered back with a three of their own to extend its lead to 38-20 with 6:51 on the clock. With Penn ahead 42-20, Lippold racked off seven consecutive points with two free throws, a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit to 42-27 with 1:12 to go. The Quakers scored the final five points of the quarter to build its lead back to 20 at the end of three.
Â
Dartmouth raised its play in the fourth, winning the final quarter, 17-13. Brown had five points in the quarter and
Emily Dryden gave the Big Green solid minutes in the final ten minutes. Penn maintained its lead throughout and stayed ahead, winning the game by 16. Â Â Â
