NEW YORK – Isalys Quinones sank two free throws with four seconds left in the game to put the Big Green ahead and seal a 70-69 win at Columbia Saturday night. In a game of momentum, Dartmouth never led until early in the fourth quarter and survived an electric Levien Gym crowd down the stretch.
Â
Dartmouth gets above .500 with the win and is now 10-9 (3-3 Ivy), while Columbia falls to 6-13 (2-4 Ivy). This marks the first time since the 2006-07 season that the Big Green swept their New York trip.
Â
For the second straight game, it was the team leaders leading the way. Playing in her home city,
Cy Lippold finished with 20 points and seven assists, hitting key shot after key shot. Quinones led the team with 21 points, including 12 of Dartmouth's 19 fourth quarter points, and pulled down five rebounds.
Paula Lenart posted her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 boards.
Â
"We have been talking all year about fighting, staying focused, defending and rebounding as best we can and keep working," said
Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "And then we get to the third quarter and we finally found a rhythm offensively.
Cy Lippold playing in front of her entire family was amazing and she stepped up and Ice stepped up. The senior class is the reason for the sweep this weekend."
Â
Picking up in the third quarter, the Lions surged ahead to a 46-35 advantage at the 4:36 mark. The game then flipped gears and Dartmouth clawed its way back into it when Lippold and McKenna made back-to-back threes and Quinones scored in the paint. Lippold made two more baskets, igniting the Dartmouth faithful in attendance. In the final seconds of the third, Lippold took it the length of the court and set up Lenart for a buzzer-beater in the paint to tie the game at 51.
Â
Fittingly, Quinones made a free throw to spark a quick 5-0 run, Dartmouth was on top for the first time all game and eventually extended its advantage to 56-51 with 7:07 left in regulation. Columbia never backed down and eventually cut the Dartmouth lead to 64-63 with 2:39 to go.
Â
Quinones hit a 3-pointer at the 2:06 mark to put Dartmouth ahead by four, but the Lions kept fighting back. Madison Hardy was fouled shooting a three with 13 seconds left and sank all her shots at the line, giving Columbia a 69-68 lead. After a Dartmouth timeout, Quinones got the ball underneath and was fouled with 4.7 on the clock. She sank both free throws, giving Dartmouth the lead and the game.
Â
The Big Green won the battle on the boards, 38-22, and outscored the Lions in the paint, 26-16.
Â
Dartmouth starts its first of four home games Friday at 7 p.m. at Leede Arena against the Ivy League leading Penn Quakers. Â
