SORRENTO, Fla. — The Dartmouth women's golf team started the Morehead State Spring Citrus Challenge as it finished, claiming fifth place in the nine-team field. Senior
Catharine Roddy and sophomore
Moon Cheong led the Big Green on the final leaderboard in a tie for 17th, while freshman
Kaitlyn Lees and
Kristen Soh provided the team's low rounds of the day at 4-over par (76).
Murray State posted the low score in each of the three rounds to win handily with an 873 (+9), 21 strokes ahead of Kesier University and 39 ahead of third-place Georgia State. Austin Peay (914, +50) beat out Dartmouth by eight strokes for fourth.
Lees opened the round at the par-72, 5,929-yard RedTail Golf Course on the 14th hole with the shotgun start and played her first seven holes at 1-under with six pars and a birdie on 16. After bogeying the next four holes and six of eight, she righted herself and sank a birdie on 11 and parred the final two holes to wrap her tournament with a 79-77-76—232 (+16) to tie for 23rd in the 55-player field.
Soh, who had Dartmouth's low round on the first day of the tournament, carded her 76 in slightly different fashion with 13 pars and a birdie on the par-4 fifth hole, leaving her in 31st place with a 74-84-76—234 (+18).
The Big Green's two leaders over the three rounds both got off to a bit of a slow start as Roddy took a double bogey out of the gate on 13 and Cheong suffered one on the one hole she could not tame all tournament — the 18th. But they settled into the round with Roddy dropping a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole and Cheong making par on nine of her last dozen holes to score a 79 (+7) on the day. For the three rounds, they bested Lees by a stroke at 15-over par (231) to tie four others for 17th.
Junior
Kristen Chen matched Roddy and Soh with a 7-over 79, picking up birdies on a pair of par-5 holes to conclude the three rounds in a tie for 34th with a 236 (+20).
Of the three individuals playing for Dartmouth, junior
Maddie Nelson enjoyed the best score with a 19-over 235 in a tie for 32nd after notching a 76 (+4) today.
Murray State had the top two golfers when all was said and done with Anna Moore earning medalist honors by six strokes with a 4-under 212 (70-70-72) while her teammate Linette Holmslykke was the runner-up with a 71-76-71—218 (+2), two strokes ahead of Georgia State's Chloe Howard.
The Big Green's next tournament is at the Harvard Invitational at the Orange County National Golf Course in Orlando, Florida, on March 30-31.
