ALBANY, N.Y. – For the second time in the 2018-19 season, Dartmouth's
Drew O'Connor has been named the ECAC Hockey Men's Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Â
O'Connor was awarded with the weekly accolade thanks to a three-goal effort over the weekend in a road split at Union and Rensselaer
Â
The Chatham, New Jersey, native scored his first goal of the weekend on a broken play in front of the net at Union, netting the first of Dartmouth's two goals in the final minute and a half to erase a 3-1 deficit and force overtime.
Â
The next night at RPI, O'Connor scored a pair of goals in the second period, notching his 12th and 13th of the season in a span of just two minutes and 31 seconds. The second of those two scores proved to be the game winner as the Big Green defeated the Engineers, 5-2, and locked up the No. 5 seed in the upcoming league tournament.
Â
As previously mentioned, this is the second time this season that O'Connor has been named the league's top rookie, also winning the award on Oct. 29 after his first weekend of play.
Â
Through the end of the regular season, O'Connor becomes the first rookie to lead the Big Green in scoring by himself in the 22 seasons that Koenig Family Head Coach
Bob Gaudet '81 has led the program. He joins Tyler Sikura '15 as the only freshman to be atop the scoring lead as he tied with Doug Jones '12 with 25 points through the regular season and four playoff games in 2011-12.
Â
As it stands now, his 13 goals this season rank third amongst all freshmen in Division I, while his 0.45 goals per game leads all ECAC first-year players.
Â
O'Connor and his Dartmouth teammates will host 12th-seeded St. Lawrence in a best-of-three first round series this weekend at Thompson Arena for the second year in a row. All games will start at 7 p.m., including a Game 3 on Sunday if the teams split the Friday and Saturday night contests.
