EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Sophomore
Sam Ohno made par on 15 holes and was just 1-over in the first round of the Ivy League Championship at Hidden Creek Country Club on Friday, helping Dartmouth finish the day in fourth place at 16-over par (300). Ohno's performance left him in fifth on the leaderboard, four strokes behind Princeton's Evan Quinn who sank a tournament-high six birdies in the first 18 holes.
The Tigers had the top two golfers in the standings, helping them jump to the lead with a 4-over 288, eight strokes ahead of Yale. Cornell just edged out the Big Green for third place by a single stroke, while Harvard and Columbia tied for fifth (+19), and Penn (+21) and Brown (+33) rounded out the field.
Ohno was about as consistent as one can get on the front nine of the par-71, 7,003-yard course, parring every hole except the par-5, 537-yard third hole, which he birdied to reach the turn at 1-under. He had a hiccup on the 12th and 13th holes with back-to-back bogeys but went right back to making par as he did on the final five holes to finish his round.
Freshman
Mark Turner wasn't far behind Ohno for nearly the entire round as he parred eight of the first nine with only a bogey on the par-3, 177-yard seventh marring his card. A double bogey on another par 3 dropped him to 3-over, but he made par on the next five holes before sinking his lone birdie on the par-5, 531-yard 17th. But he ended the day on a sour note with a double on the 18th to close with a 75 (+4), putting him in a tie for 14th.
Turner's brother, sophomore
James Turner, was in good shape on the front nine as well, reaching the turn at even par with two birdies to his credit. He had some difficulty on the back nine, however, and gradually fell out of the top 10 into a tie for 22nd with a 6-over 77.
In a reversal of fortune sophomore captain
Jason Liu had a slow start out of the gate with five bogeys in the first seven holes. A birdie on the par-4, 329-yard eighth set him straight as he parred nine of the last 10 holes and ended up with a 5-over 76, tying him for 16th.
Senior
John Lazor had a rough go of it until he sank a pair of birdies in the final four holes. He finished tied for 37th with an 81 (+10).
Dartmouth will be paired with Cornell in the second round on Saturday. The first players will get off the tee at 11 a.m., while Lazor will be the first Big Green golfer to start his round at 12:20 p.m.
Notes: Not only did Ohno have the most pars, the younger Turner was second with 14 … Ohno was even par on the par-3 holes, tied for third-best in the 40-player field … Princeton has the top two players on the leaderboard with Sam Clayman a stroke behind his teammate … the only other golfer to beat par was Cornell's Tianyi Cen with a 70, and Yale's Paul Stankey is fourth at even par.
