RINGOES, N.J. — With a 2-over 74, freshman
Kaitlyn Lees led the Dartmouth women's golf team to a third-place finish at the conclusion of the first round of play at the Ivy League Championship at The Ridge at Back Brook. Lees is tied for fourth on the leaderboard, four strokes behind Columbia's Jennifer Wang.
The Big Green ended the day 19-over (307) as a team, leaving them 10 strokes behind the leader, Penn (297), and nine behind the Lions. But Dartmouth is two strokes ahead of Harvard and Princeton with Yale (+26) and Brown (+29) rounding out the field on the par-72, 6,042-yard course.
Lees had a consistent round with 12 pars and a pair of birdies, both coming on par-5 holes. At 1-over through six holes, she recorded her first birdie on the 500-yard seventh but bogeyed nine to reach the turn at 1-over. After suffering a bogey on 13, the came right back on the next hole with another birdie. After taking a bogey on 16, she wrapped up her day with a pair of pars to enter the clubhouse tied for fourth with Princeton's Maya Walton and Harvard's Elizabeth Wang.
Joining Lees in the top 10 is sophomore
Moon Cheong with a 4-over 76, tying her for ninth with seven others. She began the day well with a pair of pars and a birdie on the par-4 third hole, then had three bogeys on the front nine and a double on 10. But she collected herself and made par on the next six holes before sinking her second birdie on the 155-yard, par-3 17th. A bogey on 18 dropped her back into ninth.
Junior
Maddie Nelson practically bookended her round with birdies, dropping them on the third and 18th holes, as she came in a stroke behind Cheong at 5-over par, tying her for 17th overall. Freshman
Kristen Chen carded an 80 (+8) in her Ivy League Championship debut, while senior and two-time All-Ivy golfer
Catharine Roddy struggled with an 83 (+11).
The second round is scheduled to tee off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Dartmouth will play with Penn and Columbia and tee off on the first hole.
Notes: Lees played the par-5 holes at 2-under on the day, second only to the leader Jennifer Wang (-3) … Cheong was particularly adept on the par-3 holes, playing those at 1-under, tied for second best on the day … Dartmouth has not finished as high as third for the entire championship since 2004.
