HANOVER, N.H. – No. 40 Dartmouth men's tennis suffered a 4-3 loss to Cornell at the Thompson Outdoor Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Big Green are now 14-8 overall and 3-3 in Ivy League play, while the Big Red improved to 14-9 and 5-1.
Â
"Cornell fought hard in a very close match," head coach
Chris Drake said. "We still have a lot to play for next week with a shot at the NCAA Tournament if we win. It'll be a tough match against a very good Harvard team, but we will be ready."
Â
Dartmouth started the day by winning the doubles point following a 6-2 victory by 19th-ranked
Charlie Broom and
David Horneffer at the No. 1 position and a 7-5 win by sophomores
Dan Martin and
John Speicher on court three.
Â
Big Red victories at No. 3 and 6 singles put the visitors ahead, but a second-set tiebreaker win by freshman
Sid Chari on court five knotted the match at two. Another Cornell win at the No. 4 spot gave the Big Red a 3-2 edge with two courts still at play.
Â
At the top spot, 60th-ranked Broom dropped his first set to Alafia Ayeni, 7-5, before taking the second by the same score. In a close third set, Ayeni walked away with a 6-3 win to clinch. Play continued on court two, with the 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3 victory going to Martin.
