HANOVER, N.H. – The No. 41 Dartmouth men's tennis team defeated No. 39 Harvard, 4-1, in the Big Green's regular season finale. The Big Green improved to 15-8 overall and 4-3 in Ivy League play, while the Crimson fell to 18-7 and 5-2.
Â
"We knew that, to have a shot at the NCAA Tournament, we needed to win this match," head coach
Chris Drake said. "We did a great job playing under the pressure of knowing that. Harvard is good and hadn't lost a doubles point all Ivy season, so that was big to get the early lead. We battled across all singles courts. Our guys have really hung in there all year and we will find out on Monday if it's enough to get us into the tournament. Based on our ranking and results, we think we have a good shot."
Â
Dartmouth wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions put the Green up heading into singles. Sophomores
Peter Conklin and
Casey Ross got things started with a 6-3 win on court two, while classmates
Dan Martin and
John Speicher had a tougher match, but came out on top with a 7-6(1) victory.
Â
Playing at the top spot for the first time this season, Martin got singles play started with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Robert Wrzesinski. Harvard picked up its lone point at the No. 6 position, but three-set victories by freshman
Sid Chari on court four and junior
Charlie Broom at the No. 2 spot allowed Dartmouth to clinch.
Â
The Big Green will find out their postseason fate during the NCAA selection show at 6 p.m. on Monday. Fans can watch
