Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2021 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by Cape Air.
This installment focuses on Kailua, Hawaii, native and member of the women's swimming & diving team
Hi'ilani Hopkins.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Hi'ilani Hopkins: In addition to taking classes, I'm working as a lifeguard at swim docks on the river. It's really nice on days when the weather is nice and helps me maintain my tan.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
HH: This might not be too common of an answer, but I really like Collis. I like the food, the fact that there are places to study inside and outside and the free coffee/tea from One Wheelock.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
HH: I'm interested in healthcare, and I've been working to explore that interest through participating in research and volunteerism. I volunteer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) as a member of the Patient Support Corps, which basically helps to create a more interactive and comprehensive relationship between patients and providers. I also do research with The Dartmouth Institute.
DS: Other that your parents, who has had the greatest influence in your life?
HH: My freshman biology teacher was my mentor throughout high school, and we still keep in touch regularly. She helped me develop a good work ethic and helped open a lot of opportunities for me during and after high school.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
HH: I grew up in Kailua, a beach town outside of Honolulu in Hawai'i. Hanover is definitely different in terms of weather, but it's been a pretty easy adjustment for me since it's a small town and people are generally friendly.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
HH: How to Get Away with Murder
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
HH: Hopefully go to medical school, but we'll see how that goes.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
HH: I've been wanting to go to Japan for a really long time but just haven't made it out there. The country seems beautiful and the food looks delicious!
