HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey dropped a non-conference game at Boston College Friday afternoon, 5-2, at Newton Campus Fields.
Seniors
Katie Spanos and
Carmen Braceras each scored and picked up an assist for the Big Green (0-3) in the defeat. The Eagles (2-3) were powered by a pair of two-goal games from Elizabeth Warner and Margo Carlin.
Sky Caron also scored for BC in the first meeting between the two teams since the 2011 season.
The performance of the day for Dartmouth was from sophomore goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci and her career-high 20 saves. That mark is the most by a Big Green keeper in at the last five seasons, four more than
Hailey Valerio's 16 at Maine last fall.
Santucci did become the first Dartmouth goalie since
Meagan Vakiener '12 in 2009 to turn aside 20 shots from the opposition in a game. That season, Vakiener stopped 23 in the opener against Maine on Sept. 6 and then 21 vs. No. 6 Syracuse on Oct. 11, with the latter marking the most recent occurrence by a player in the green and white.
"Another tough loss vs. a top-level regional and ACC team," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "I'm very proud of Bella in the cage, she absolutely gave us a chance to stay in that game. Unfortunately, we gave up a few too many rebounds and or non-pressured shots, and that cost us. A team like BC will make you pay for those mishaps.
"On our attacking side, we saw some quality play to build the ball out of our backfield, through the midfield and up to our forwards, but had trouble getting through a stingy BC defense. I am happy that of our three shots on goal were converted into two goals for...I'll take that percentage any day...we just need to shoot more," Fowler added.
The Eagles had a 1-0 edge at the half, but Spanos' first of the season just 54 seconds into the third quarter tied the game with Braceras and
Taylor Hantman picking up helpers on the play.
Three straight goals from the home team followed with Braceras' team-leading second of the year coming in the 47th minute to start the fourth quarter. Spanos picked up her first assist of the year with a crossing pass to set up the backhand shot.
But Caron's goal followed and pushed the lead back to its final differential of three.
In addition to Santucci's saves,
Maddie Donahue also was credited with a defensive save, her first of the season and the second by a Dartmouth player.
The Green and White remain in Massachusetts with a Sunday match-up at Holy Cross set to begin at noon.
