ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's golf team had two players finish the first rounds of the Cornell Invitational in the top 10 as the Big Green shot a 292-293—587 (+17) to end the day in a tie for third place in the 16-team field, 10 strokes behind Columbia. The only team between Dartmouth and the Lions is the host Cornell at 16-over par, while St. Bonaventure matched the Big Green score.
Dartmouth was led by a pair of sophomores in
Charles Petrie and
Mark Turner on the 6,904-yard, par-71 Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. Petrie was tied for the lead at the conclusion of the opening round with a 2-under 69 and dropped to 4-under with a pair of birdies on the first five holes of the second 18. A rough patch of four bogeys and a double within a span of eight holes dropped him out of the lead, but he righted his ship on the final four holes with three pars and a birdie to finish the day with a 69-74—143 (+1).
Turner, meanwhile, matched each of his six birdies with bogeys over the first 35 holes. A bogey on 18 kept him from remaining even par in both rounds, but he still rose four place in the standings from the first round to the second. He and Petrie will enter the day five strokes off the pace set by Columbia's Daniel Core, who carded a 4-under 138.
Junior captain
Jason Liu was left just outside the top 20 at 5-over par three birdies and eight bogeys, tying for 21st. He struggled a bit early but found some consistency over the final 13 holes with 11 pars and two birdies, giving him something to build on heading into the third and final round on Sunday.
Rounding out the Big Green five were junior
Sam Ohno with a 77-75—152 (+10) in a tie for 48th, and senior
Riley Griffin in a tie for 73rd with a 158 (+16). Junior James Petrie played as an individual but withdrew after the first round due to an injury.
Dartmouth will tee off the final round on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with Cornell and Columbia.
