A 69th minute goal gave the Wildcats the victory
DURHAM, N.H. – Dartmouth men's soccer battled No. 18 New Hampshire on the road Wednesday night, but ended up falling, 1-0. A 69th minute goal by UNH's Fabian Lutz was the difference maker.
The Big Green drop to 2-2-0 on the season with both losses coming to ranked opponents. The Wildcats remain undefeated with a 4-0-2 record and reclaim the Granite State after a scoreless draw last year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Budnik finished with a career high seven saves, keeping Dartmouth in the game along with the Big Green back line of Ohad Yahalom, Garrett Scott, Henry Baldwin and Mothibi Penn-Kekana.
Budnik was put to the test for the first time in the 15th minute, halting a shot by Lutz. UNH continued to apply pressure in the first 45 minutes with nine shots, but the Big Green were there each time to make the stop.
UNH's goal came in the 69th minute. Kimal Bilal sent a through ball to Lutz who had open space on the right side and snuck the ball to the bottom left of the net past the diving Budnik. Josh Bauer was also credited with an assist.
The Big Green were aggressive in their attempt to level the score. The best chance of the night came on a header by Tiger Graham that was stopped with a full extension save by the UNH keeper. Dartmouth had two corner kicks in the ensuing minutes but could not capitalize.
Dartmouth was dealt a red card in the 85th minute and the Wildcats were able to run out the clock.
The Big Green are back at Burnham Field at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday night for a meeting with Niagara.
