HANOVER, N.H. — One day after posting a 1-under 283 as a team, the Dartmouth men's golf team improved by two strokes to finish its home invitational in fourth place with a 4-under 564. Drexel took home the team title thanks to an 8-under 276 today, wrapping up the two rounds at Hanover Country Club at 11-under par, while Rhode Island and Bucknell tied for second at 6-under.
Another beautiful day on the par-71, 6,472-yard course led to rounds below par for each of the top four teams. Big Green junior
Sam Ohno took advantage of the perfect conditions to sink four birdies and 12 pars to card a 2-under 69, leading the team. Beginning on the third hole with the shotgun start, Ohno dropped birdies on each of his first two holes, then another on 10 and lastly on 16.
While Ohno finished the tournament tied for 12th in the 74-player field with a 1-under 141, Dartmouth got a top-10 finish from junior captain
Jason Liu who was 1-under today and shot 69-70—139 for the two rounds to tie for sixth. His day was a little more wild with six birdies (giving him 12 on the weekend, tied for second most), including three on the last four holes to close strong.
Sophomore
Mark Turner matched Liu's 70 (-1) today with 13 pars and a trio of birdies, tying his classmate
Charles Petrie for 20th at 1-over (143) for the tournament. Like Turner, Petrie had 13 pars but two birdies to shoot a 1-over 72 for the round.
Senior
Will Bednarz was the final player for the team and finished strong with three birdies on his last six holes to card a 71-74—145 (+3) for the weekend, tying for 28th.
Taking home medalist honors was Bucknell's Chris Tanabe who started the day in fourth but overcame a four-stroke deficit by shooting a bogey-free round with six birdies for a 65. That vaulted him past Drexel's Alex Butler by two strokes with a 9-under 133 for the tournament.
Dartmouth will play one more tournament this fall at the Firestone Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, on September 30 and October 1.
