AKRON, Ohio — Dartmouth junior
Jason Liu shot even par in each of the first two rounds of the Firestone Invitational on Monday, finishing the day in a tie for 12th in the 81-player field. The captain's play led the Big Green to 10th place when the day ended at 19-over as a team while three teams battled it out at the top of the leader board, separated by a single stroke.
Dartmouth completed the first round in sixth place with a 295 (+7), then fell back four places after shooting an even 300 (+12) in the second round on the Firestone Country Club North Course, which played at 7,125 yards. South Carolina-Aiken took a one-stroke lead after 18 holes with a 3-under 285, then maintained that advantage by matching second-place Old Dominion's 7-under 281. Host Akron had the low round of the day with an 11-under 277 over the second 18, tying the Monarchs for second at day's end.
The start of the tournament at was delayed by inclement weather, but when Liu teed off on the 201-yard, par-3 11th hole to start his first round, he went on a bit of a roller-coaster ride. His first 18 featured five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars to finish at even par. On his second tour, Liu settled into a more consistent groove with 14 pars to his credit while making birdie on a pair of par-5 holes.
Sophomore
Mark Turner matched Liu at even par in the first round with four birdies and 10 pars. He proceeded to add three more birdies the second time around, but one bad hole sabotaged his round as he wrapped up the day with a 72-76—148 (+4), leaving him in a tie for 34th.
Closing the day two strokes behind Turner, junior
Sam Ohno collected three birdies in each of his rounds to tie for 51st at 6-over par. And after carding a 5-over 77 to start the day, sophomore
Charles Petrie looked to be in control in his second tour, starting at 3-under through eight holes, only to fall back and join Turner and Ohno with a 76. Petrie wrapped up his 36 in a tie for 64th with a 9-over 153.
Freshman
