AKRON, Ohio — With birdies on five of the last 12 holes, Dartmouth junior
Jason Liu completed the third round of the Firestone Invitational with a 4-under 68 to vaulting eight spots in the final standings. His final tally of 72-72-68—212 (-4) left him just four strokes off the pace and tied for fourth.
Dartmouth wrapped up the tournament in 13th place at 26-over par (295-300-295—890) while South Carolina-Aiken kept Santa Clara and Bowling Green at bay by a single stroke to win the team title with a 7-under 857. Host Akron, led by medalist Fabian Sundén at 8-under par, finished fourth at 4-under as a team.
Liu began the day tied for 12th at even par when he teed off on the 10th hole of the par-72, 7,125-yard North Course at Firestone Country Club. A birdie on 11 was offset by bogeys on 13 and 14, but he tore up the course the rest of the way with five birdies and eight pars to post his 68 and climb into a tie for fourth in the 81-player field.
Junior
Sam Ohno provided three birdies of his own and was sitting at 2-under through 14 holes but suffered a double bogey to end the day at 1-over par and 7-over for the tournament, tying him for 41st. After an up-and-down first nine holes that had him at 2-over, he closed with nine consecutive pars and tied for 34th with a 222 (+6).
The Big Green squad also included sophomore
Charles Petrie who shot a 233 (+17) over the three rounds and freshman
Jason Chen at 242 (+26).
This was the final fall tournament for Dartmouth, which will return to the links in the spring.
