HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Dartmouth men's golf team completed the first two rounds of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Monday in a tie for 16th with fellow Ivy League member Cornell with identical scores of 311 in each round to end the day at 46-over par. Augusta University leads the 17-team field with a 6-under 570, followed by Furman in second (-4) and Davidson in third (+5).
Although there were a few sprinkles throughout the day at the 6,913-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation Golf Course, the weather was generally a non-factor. Freshman
Eli Thrasher had the best round for the Big Green to start the day with a 2-over 74 thanks to three birdies — one on each of his first two holes (15 and 16 with the shotgun start) and another on the 14th to end his round. But those three birdies matched the total his teammates combined to sink, though sophomore
Charles Petrie was only a stroke behind Thrasher as he had 14 pars on his first tour of the links.
The second round was quite a bit wilder for Dartmouth with 13 birdies by the five players — and at least two for each one — yet finishing with a team score of 311 (+23) once again. Senior
Will Bednarz produced the low score over the second 18 with four birdies to his credit as he carded a 3-over 75. Junior captain
Jason Liu was two strokes of that pace with a 77 (+5), while Petrie (+7) and Thrasher (+8) comprised the rest of the scoring for Dartmouth.
At the end of the day, Thrasher and Petrie were tied for 63rd place with a 10-over 154 with Bednarz tied for 72nd at 12-over and Liu tied for 79th at 16-over.
Augusta's Ben Wyk leads the 89-player field with a 7-under 137, just one stroke ahead of Davidson's Alex Ross.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. with another shotgun start.
