HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The Dartmouth men's golf team kicks off the spring schedule on Monday with the first two rounds of the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The Big Green are sending five golfers down South for the tournament, led by captain
Jason Liu. The junior captain led the team in stroke average this past fall at 71.38, finishing two of the three tournaments under par with top-10 finishes after earning second-team All-Ivy League honors last spring.
Another veteran heading to the coast with the Big Green is senior
Will Bednarz, who has seen action in only one competition over the past year, the Dartmouth Invitational last fall where he had a solid showing with a 3-over 145, tying for 28th in the 74-player field. Despite his lack of recent play, he competed in the Ivy League Championship in each of his first two years with the Big Green and is expected to contribute heavily to the team's success.
The rest of the squad will consist of two sophomores —
Mark Turner and Charlie Petrie — and freshman
Eli Thrasher. Turner finished his freshman year strong, placing 15th at the Ivy League Championship, then posted a 72.63 stroke average in the fall with a pair of top-20 finishes. Petrie likewise had two top-20 finishes in the fall while recording a 74.25 stroke average, while Thrasher performed well in his collegiate debut with a 4-over 146 to tie for 32nd at the Dartmouth Invitational.
The Big Green would like to improve upon their showing in this tournament after placing 17th of 19 teams last year, which could be chalked up to shaking off the winter rust as the team improved by at least 13 strokes in each successive round.
This year's tournament features 18 teams with a shotgun start in each of the three rounds on the 6,913-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation Golf Course. Only one other Ivy League school — Cornell — will compete with the Big Green, with the other teams coming from Akron, Augusta, Charleston Southern, Cleveland State, Davidson, Dayton, Francis Marion, Furman, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Presbyterian, Radford, Temple, USC Aiken, Winthrop and Wofford. Monday's first round tees off at 8:15 a.m.
