HANOVER, N.H. – Senior
Katie Spanos scored with 5:43 left in overtime to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Chase Field.
The game went to OT thanks to freshman
Holley Cromwell scoring her first career goal with 1:17 left in regulation to tie the game at three and set up for the OT heroics from her team captain.
For Spanos, this was her second OT game winner of 2019 already as she also notched the fifth-period goal at Holy Cross two weeks ago.
The Big Green (3-5) had to mount a two-goal comeback in the second half as the River Hawks (4-4) had a 3-1 lead nearing the end of the third quarter before
Carmen Braceras scored her team-leading fifth of the season with 2:55 on the clock.
It got to be 3-1 thanks to Sofie Knook opening the scoring in the 12th minute and a pair of goals from Grace Davis sandwiching the mid-game intermission.
Tatum Schultz's first of the fall came in the 19th minute to give the home team its first goal of the contest.
Braceras' goal in the 43rd minute came on an incredibly pretty centering feed from Spanos on the goal line, through the keeper's leg and to the waiting stick of her fellow senior for the tap-in tally.
Cromwell's first career goal was the result of a defensive zone gaffe by UML, losing a ball in the circle for the rookie to collect, move around the goalie and deposit into the back of the gage for the equalizer.
Spanos then put forth a tremendous individual effort in the overtime to secure the win for the Green and White. Picking up the ball near midfield, the Pennsylvania native was able to weave through the defense along the side before taking it into the middle, where she turned and fired a low shot through a crowd for her eighth-career game-winning goal.
Both
Isabella Santucci of Dartmouth and Lowell's Eva Berkhout finished the contest with three saves in 64:17 of action.
The Big Green are on the road for four straight games, including two in Providence next weekend at Brown (Saturday) and the Friars (Sunday).
