Dartmouth drops its first game of the 2019 season
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Dartmouth women's soccer suffered a 1-0 defeat Friday afternoon at Florida Atlantic. It was the first road game of the year for the Big Green (2-1-0) who could only manage two shots in the contest, while the Owls (3-2-0) scored in the 72nd minute get their record over .500.
Goalkeeper Mariel Gordon finished the game with five saves and the Big Green defense was a bright spot, enduring 12 shots by the Owls, and giving Dartmouth an opportunity to win.
"We defended really well as a team today," said head coach Ron Rainey. "But this is the kind of game where we have to look for some more scoring chances. Hats off to FAU, they are a good team and have played a tough schedule so far. Now we have to regroup and get ready for FIU on Sunday."
FAU was on the attack from the opening whistle with two shots in the first 20 minutes. The Owls' first shot was off the mark, but the second in the 19th minute was on target and Gordon came away with her first save of the match. The Owls finished the first half with a corner kick and two more shots, one of which was saved by Gordon.
Dartmouth had their first chance on the offensive end in the 57th minute when Erin Kawakami fired a shot that was saved. On its 11th shot of the game, FAU was able to find the back of the net when Pernille Velta scored the game winner off an assist from Miracle Porter.
Lorna MacFarlane launched one more shot for the Big Green in the 81st minute, but it was off the mark.
The Big Green stay in the Sunshine State to face Florida International on Sunday at 12 p.m.
