HANOVER, N.H. – After trailing by three goals in the first, Dartmouth women's hockey scored a trio of unanswered goals to send the game to overtime, eventually tying Union by a score of 3-3.
Sophomore
Gabby Billing scored the Big Green's first and third tallies, while classmate
Sara McClanahan also ended the game with two points from one goal and one assist. Freshmen
CC Bowlby and
Georgia Kraus both had helpers.
In net, rookie
Hannah Humphreys almost matched her season-best saves (34 at Cornell on Oct. 27) by stopping 33.
"I'm really proud of the effort and resiliency we showed in the third period and in overtime," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "We worked hard to come back, and I thought our penalty kill down the stretch was very good. With that said, there were details of our game that were missing. We need to do a better job making sure we're mentally ready to play how we know we can play."
The first shot of the game resulted in a goal for the Dutchwomen at 2:18 and one more added at 6:20 gave the visitors a 2-0 edge very early in the opening stanza. The Big Green found their way into the game and had some good chances but saw themselves behind by three after yet another Union tally. With 20 seconds to go, too many Dutchwomen on the ice during a Green breakaway resulted in a penalty shot for Billing, getting the home team back within two.
Humphreys and the Dartmouth defense looked good in the second and kept Union out of the net the entire time while also not being able to get past goalie Bella McKee.
Having been down by two goals since the first period, tallies by McClanahan at 5:03 and one on the power play by Billing at 7:04 of the third suddenly made for a tied game. With neither team able to find the back of the net, the game went to overtime.
Dartmouth started the extra period on the penalty kill and Union took advantage of that fact, firing shot after shot at Humphreys, but the Big Green defense came up big with a handful of blocked shots. Another penalty for the home team gave the Dutchwomen another shot, but they were turned away each time.
Union had a 36-27 shot advantage. Dartmouth went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the visitors went 1-for-6.
The Big Green will be home again next weekend when they host Princeton and Quinnipiac.
