Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their fall seasons postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Kira Koehler, a forward from Macungie, Pennsylvania, on the field hockey team.
DartmouthSports.com: What have workouts been like so far?
Kira Koehler: Because I am not considered "on" and don't have access to campus athletic facilities, I've spent the fall term running outside and use a stationary bike in my apartment. My roommate and I push each other to get faster and stronger by completing the same Peloton rides and jogging the same routes outside.
DS: What is your most memorable non-sports memory?
KK: Over Sophomore Summer, I lived on School Street with the four other seniors - Jensen, Tatum, Taylor, and Lia. We made countless memories passing each other's rooms, having house dinners, and hosting our parents during Parents Weekend. Without field hockey, I may not have met my four best friends!
DS: Do you have any hidden talents?
KK: No hidden talent can surpass Tatum's opera singing. However, I have an extremely strong sense of direction. After a four-hour drive, I can turn around and get home without a GPS.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
KK: If I could swap places with any teammate, it would be one of our five freshmen. While their first term at Dartmouth has been highly unconventional and maybe a bit strange, I would love to have another four years at Dartmouth. During my first visit to Hanover as a high school sophomore, my father turned to me and said, "You have your whole life to live in a city. Go live in the woods for four years." Dartmouth has since become a permanent element of my growth, a place of pure intellectual adventure, and a second home.
DS: What are your plans after Dartmouth (as much as you can plan for anything during this pandemic)?
KK: After graduation, I will be joining Morgan Stanley's Investment Banking Division in New York City. I also hope to attend business school and (potentially) start my own company. Later, I hope to run for President of the United States (my teammates have nicknamed me POTUS).
DS: What was the best gift you ever received?
KK: Because the seniors weren't able to have many of the quintessential traditions that accompany our senior field hockey season, the senior parents designed a necklace with a pine tree charm on it. Taylor, Tatum, Jensen, Lia, and I have been best friends since our freshman year, and we've all worn our necklaces each day since their gifting. It's a reminder that we are always connected - even if it's not snacking on pretzels on a bus driving to Cornell or dressing up in costumes for Halloween practice on Chase Field.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life and why?
KK: Throughout my life, my younger brother, Klay, has prevailed as my primary role model. After his gap-year, Klay will begin his freshman year at University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. Klay is undoubtedly one of the most athletically talented, musically gifted and academically motivated individuals I know. He is straight-A student, a National Merit Commended Scholar, and a nationally ranked Marine Fitness Team participant. Aside from his academic, athletic and musical accomplishments, Klay's most outstanding attribute is his collaborative and kind-hearted nature. He will forever stand as an individual I strive to personify. He is my younger brother, mentor, and best friend.
