WATERVILLE/CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Podiums from sophomore
Ellie Curtis in the women's slalom, senior
A.J. Ginnis in the men's slalom and junior
Katharine Ogden in the women's 10K classical allowed Dartmouth to edge out Middlebury for second place by four points at the Colby Carnival on Saturday, 831-827. Vermont, however, won its third straight carnival in three tries this season by scoring 899 points.
The Big Green entered the day just 16 points behind the Catamounts and 35 ahead of the Panthers, but Vermont won both of the men's races on the day by scoring 130 points in each to pull away from the field. Middlebury made a run at Dartmouth with a strong showing in the classical races, but the Big Green's performance on the slopes proved to be too much to overcome.
In the women's slalom at Sugarloaf, Curtis was in 13th after the first run only to beat the field by more than half a second in the afternoon to climb onto the podium in third place with a time of 1:50.28. Four other Dartmouth skiers finished in the top eight, led by junior
Tricia Mangan in fifth place (1:50.76) and junior
Claire Thomas in sixth (1:50.90), as the Big Green totaled 120 points to win the event. Ali Nullmeyer of Middlebury claimed the gold in 1:49.13 with Emma Woodhouse of New Hampshire second in 1:49.34. But Dartmouth was the lone team to top 100 points, totaling 120, to win the slalom going away.
While Ginnis ended up on the podium, it was sophomore
Andrew Miller (who won the giant slalom yesterday) leading Dartmouth after the first run, sitting in third thanks to a time of 48.78 seconds. Ginnis was back in eighth place but like Curtis, ripped off the best run of the afternoon session to vault his way up to third in 1:43.48. Miller, unfortunately, did not finish the second run, but senior
Kipling Weisel tied for sixth place in 1:44.73, and senior
Peter Fucigna also scored for the Green in 19th (1:47.84) as the men finished second in the team standings with 104 points. Vermont won the event with 130 points thanks to taking the top two steps on the podium, led by Mathias Tefre in 1:42.46.
The men's 15K classical came first at the Quarry Road Trails with freshman
Cameron Wolfe having the best showing for Dartmouth with a time of 47:22.2, good for 15th place. Sophomore
Luc Golin finished up a little over a minute later in 48:23.2 to claim 26th, and junior
Tyler Lee was the next Big Green skier to cross the tape in 31st (48:55.4). As a team, Dartmouth amassed 67 points to place seventh in the event. Vermont's Ben Ogden picked up his second win of the weekend in 43:27.0, more than 90 seconds ahead of Middlebury's Peter Wolter in second, leading the Catamounts to the win with 130 points while Middlebury (107) and Bowdoin (106) battled it out for second place.
In the women's 10K classical, junior
Katharine Ogden could not match her brother's victory and settled for second place in 33:09.1, ending a winning streak of 10 consecutive individual classical races dating back to her freshman year. Middlebury's Sophia Laukli was the one to end the streak, defeating the two-time NCAA classical champion with a time of 32:41.5. The other two scoring skiers for the Big Green were both freshmen —
Mara McCollor in ninth place (35:30.0) and
Anna Lehmann in 13th (35:51.1). The Panthers also took the final podium step and won the event with 129 points while Vermont and Dartmouth tied for second with 106 points each.
Next up for the Big Green is the Bates Carnival next weekend, beginning on Friday.
