HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth's
Andrew Miller and
Gwen Wattenmaker were named the EISA Men's and Women's Alpine Skiers of the Week, respectively, for their performances at the Bates Carnival this past weekend. The duo led the Big Green to wins in all four alpine events, collecting 169 of the team's 478 alpine points, well ahead of Middlebury's 397.
A sophomore from Park City, Utah, Miller was the lone male Dartmouth skier to score points in both the giant slalom and the slalom. He began the carnival at Sunday River with a fifth-place showing in the slalom with a combined time of 1:52.42. The following day, Miller blazed his way to a spot on the podium by taking second in the giant slalom thanks to his time of 2:14.35, a mere five-hundredths of a second off the winning pace. It was his second straight podium in the GS after winning the race at Colby the week prior.
Wattenmaker, a freshman from Olympic Valley, California, put together her best showing thus far in her rookie campaign, amassing 83 points in her races to help the Green edge out New Hampshire in both the slalom and GS. First, she skied her way to a tie for fifth in the slalom with a time of 1:51.71. In the giant slalom, Wattenmaker stepped on the podium for the first time, claiming third in 2:19.46.
Dartmouth has had a total of six skiers earn EISA Skier of the Week honors. Miller and Wattenmaker join juniors
Drew Duffy,
Tricia Mangan,
Katharine Ogden and
Claire Thomas as receiving this distinction.
The Big Green will be back in action Friday morning at the Williams Carnival.
