HANOVER, N.H. —
Chris Knight and
James Foye each scored 17 points as Dartmouth cruised to a 75-53 victory over visiting Cornell on Saturday night at Leede Arena. The Big Green (9-14, 2-6 Ivy) shot 52.9 percent from the floor while holding the Big Red (5-16, 2-6 Ivy) to 35.7 percent in sweeping a league weekend for the first time in five years.
Knight, who scored his 1,000th career point last night, hit 8-of-10 field goals and 1-of-2 at the line while adding 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and eighth of his career. Foye was 6-of-10 overall and 3-of-7 from long range while converting both of his foul shots to post his highest scoring output against an Ancient Eight team this year. Joining the duo in double figures was
Aaryn Rai with 13 points on 5-of-7 field goals with a 3-pointer and 2-of-2 at the line.
Cornell struggled without the services of the Ivy League's second-leading scorer, Jimmy Boeheim, for most of the evening. The junior averaging over 18 points a game went down with an injury just five-and-a-half minutes into the game and did not return. Dartmouth, which led just 9-6 when Boeheim went down, went on a 20-5 run over the next 6:32 to take control of the game. Knight scored all eight of his first-half points and the Big Green went 7-of-8 with two triples during the run against the deflated Big Red team.
A Terrance McBride three-point play with 4:51 left in the half did bring Cornell back within a dozen points, 33-21, but Dartmouth knocked down five of its last seven shots in the half, ending on an
Ian Carter tip-in at the buzzer for a 44-25 advantage at the intermission. That 19-point advantage — their largest against an Ivy opponent in 23 years — was made possible by the Green shooting 68 percent (17-of-25) overall with three trifectas and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) at the line.
When play resumed in the second half, Foye quickly boosted the lead to 22 points for the first of four times on the evening with a 3-pointer. While the difference never got any greater than 22, the Big Red would not close the gap to any fewer than 15 the rest of the night as Dartmouth was never under threat of losing the game.
The Big Green finished the night 27-of-51 (.529) from the floor and 6-of-17 (.353) from the perimeter as well as 15-of-18 (.833) at the foul line, matching their most free throw makes of the season. Dartmouth also dominated on the glass, 39-23, with Knight leading the way.
Cornell was just 20-of-56 (.357) shooting the ball and 5-of-23 (.217) from distance. McBride led the Big Red with 17 points on 5-of-11 field goals and a perfect 7-of-7 at the charity stripe. Bryan Knapp pitched in 10 points, and Kobe Dickson came off the bench to haul in a team-high six rebounds.
Dartmouth, winners of consecutive games for the first time since before Thanksgiving, will look to stretch its win streak to three when it hosts Penn (13-8, 5-3 Ivy) at Leede Arena next Friday night at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and Dave Faucher calling the action, and a free audio stream featuring Brett Franklin on the call will be available for free through the official website of Big Green athletics, DartmouthSports.com.
Notes: The last Ivy weekend sweep for Dartmouth came in the final weekend of the 2014-15 regular season when it beat Brown (after trailing by 24 in the second half) and Yale (to deny the Bulldogs the outright Ivy League title) … the 22-point win was the Big Green's largest against an Ivy League opponent in 21 years (70-46 over Brown, Jan. 30, 1999) … Dartmouth ended a streak of 12 consecutive losses on Saturday with the win … Knight, who has led the Green in scoring for each of the past five games, missed five shots all weekend, going 18-of-21 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the foul line in averaging 20 points in the two Big Green victories … Cornell lost both games this weekend by 22 points, dropping an 85-63 decision at Harvard last night, and fell to 0-13 in road games this season.
