Elle Louie made the game-winning basket with 17 seconds left in regulation
ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth was down 10 with under eight minutes to go, chipped away, and Elle Louie drove and scored the winning basket with 17 seconds left to boost the Big Green to a 67-65 victory over Cornell Saturday night at Newman Arena.
The Big Green (8-13, 2-6 Ivy League) shot 61.4% (27-of-44) from the field and 55.6% (5-of-9) from beyond the arc, while the Big Red (9-11, 2-6 Ivy) were limited to 40% from the floor and 23.1% from 3-point land.
Dartmouth had five players in double figures for the first time since 2018. Anna Luce led the way with 16 points and grabbed four rebounds. Elle Louie and Annie McKenna each finished with 11, while Katie Douglas and Jimena Abejon both tallied 10. Paula Lenart was key with nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
"This is a great victory for us," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We were down and stayed together to fight our way back to come away with a positive result on the road. We started the game with energy and fought for a full 40 minutes."
Contrary to recent games, Dartmouth raced ahead to an early lead. After the teams were even at six after after the first two minutes, McKenna, Luce and Louie combined for a 9-2 run to put the Big Green on top, 17-8, at the end of the first.
McKenna quickly drilled a 3-pointer to start the second and Luce followed with an and-one layup and a triple of her own to extend the Dartmouth lead to 26-10 with 8:19 on the clock. Cornell then called timeout and went with a full-court press, helping them go on a 17-3 surge to make it a 29-27 ballgame at the break.
Cornell tied the game and took the lead at the 7:22 mark in the third and maintained a slim advantage for the rest of the quarter. Douglas and Abejon kept Dartmouth close with big shots as Cornell took a 55-49 lead into the fourth.
The Big Red built their lead to 10 with 7:22 left in the game. But the Big Green steadily made their way back by going on a 15-5 run to even the score at 65 with 36 seconds left. Louie then drove from the top of the key and made a tough layup with 17 seconds left give Dartmouth the lead for good. Cornell missed two free throws with 0.1 seconds on the clock that would have tied the game.
The Big Green will now prepare for next weekend starting with Penn Friday night at 7:00 p.m. from the Palestra.
