PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Dartmouth women's basketball suffered a 67-31 defeat to Penn Friday night at The Palestra.
Â
The Big Green (8-14, 2-7 Ivy League) stuck with the Quakers (16-5, 6-2 Ivy) in the early going, but the home team used early quarter runs to pull away. Penn was led by Eleah Parkers 24-point, 13 rebound double-double.
Â
"I was happy with our first quarter, our starters came out competitive and aggressive," said Belle Koclanes, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "The highlight tonight was our youth. Our young kids came out and played excellent along with Kealy Brown. The effort from them was phenomenal and the conversation in the locker room is that we need the youth and experience to connect."
Â
Penn gained the upper hand early in the contest, jumping ahead to a 7-3 lead, but Dartmouth stayed right with the home team thanks to baskets by Paula Lenart, Anna Luce and Katie Douglas' second 3-pointer of the night to make it a 12-10 deficit at the 1:59 mark. The Quakers then used a 6-0 run to push their lead to 18-10 to finish the first.
Â
It was Much of the same to begin the second as Penn scored the first 12 points for a total run of 18-0 to extend the margin to 30-10 with 3:41 until halftime. Dartmouth scored for the first time in the quarter with 3:21 on the clock and closed the half on a 4-2 spurt to make it 30-14 at the break.
Â
The third started with an 8-0 Quaker run as their lead grew to 38-14 at 6:57. Veronica Kelly stopped the run with a jumper and Asha Taylor followed with a straight-away 3-pointer. Penn then scored nine of the next 12 points before Luce knocked down a three and Lenart scored in the final two minutes of the quarter. The Penn lead was 49-26 heading to the fourth.
Â
The final quarter began with 10 consecutive Quaker points and a 12-2 run to bring the Penn lead to 61-28 with 7:01 to go. Taylor ended that when she brought the ball up and stuck her second triple of the game. Penn scored the final six points to finish things off.
Â
Lenart, Taylor and Douglas each finished with six points for the Big Green, Lenart added six rebounds to tie for the lead the team. Luce had five points and four rebounds, while Kelly tallied four points and six boards. Â
