MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Juniors
Tricia Mangan and
Claire Thomas finished on the podium in the women's giant slalom on Saturday at the NCAA East Regional hosted by Middlebury, helping the Dartmouth women's alpine team win its eighth straight carnival race and the Big Green ski team finish third overall. Vermont ended Dartmouth's three-year reign as the East champion, edging out the host Panthers by a single point, 868-867, while the Big Green's 778 put it well ahead of fourth-place New Hampshire (660).
Mangan and Thomas were tied for sixth after the first run at the Snow Bowl with a time of 1:04.41, behind teammates
Abi Jewett (1:03.83, second) and
Stephanie Currie (1:04.22, fifth). On the second run, Mangan and Thomas had the second and third best times, respectively, with the former edging out the latter by a tenth of a second to claim second with a combined time of 2:08.77 while Thomas placed third. Currie moved up one spot into fourth with the fifth-best second run, finishing up in 2:09.35 while Jewett took fifth in 2:09.60. While Middlebury's Ali Nullmeyer won the gold with a time of 2:07.32, the top three Big Green skiers amassed 132 points to win the team title, 10 ahead of the Panthers.
Middlebury had the individual winner (Erik Arvidsson 2:01.41) and the team champion (128 points) in the men's giant slalom while Dartmouth settled for fourth overall with 84, led by senior
David Domonoske in 10th place with a time of 2:04.15. His classmate,
Kipling Weisel, was right behind him in 11th in 2:04.64, while sophomore
Andrew Miller rounded out the Big Green scorers in 15th place (2:05.44).
Over at the Rikert Nordic Center, the women skied in a tight pack in the 15K classical with their top four skiers finishing all in a row from 15th to 18th. Sophomore
Molly Gellert led the group with her time of 49:06.2, with freshman
Anna Lehmann in 16th (49:09.7) and sophomore
Rena Schwartz in 17th (49:12.4), just ahead of senior
Abby Drach (49:15.8). Vermont's Margie Freed crossed the tape first in 47:04.7, more than 20 seconds ahead of the field, while Colby's Erin Bianco (47:28.1) and Bowdoin's Renae Anderson (47:30.8) battled it out for second. The Catamounts took the team title with 118 points, 10 ahead of Colby.
Freshman
Cameron Wolfe matched his female counterpart by leading the Dartmouth men in 15th place in the 20K classical with a time of 55:06.9. Placing 21st was junior
Tyler Lee (55:27.3) while sophomore
Luc Golin finished the course in 56:44.6, good for 31st. The trio combined for 63 points, leaving the Big Green in seventh, while Vermont completed a sweep of all of the Nordic races by squeaking past Middlebury, 113-110. Panther Peter Wolter took the gold, however, with a time of 51:46.0
Dartmouth will now prepare for the NCAA Skiing Championships, which will take place in Bozeman, Montana, on March 12-15.
