HANOVER, N.H. — Twenty NCAA men's and women's basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court were selected as finalists today for the 2019-20 Senior CLASS Award, and Dartmouth guard
James Foye was among those chosen. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence — community, classroom, character and competition.
A 6-4, 195-pound guard, Foye is one of the top 3-point shooters in the country, hitting 46.1 percent (41-of-89) from the perimeter, while averaging 9.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game for the Big Green this season. The two-time team captain is one of just four players in Dartmouth history to hit 100 or more 3-pointers in a career at a 40 percent clip or better (.410). Foye has started every game since the start of his junior year (49) with over 500 points in those contests, and twice he has scored as many as 25 points in a game on the strength of seven trifectas, most recently at Georgia State on Dec. 3.
A native of Hamilton, Massachusetts, Foye is an economics major with a 3.97 GPA and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team last year as a junior. He also volunteers with the Upper Valley Haven After School program as well as at Hero fundraising events for the Children's Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD) while also visiting children at the hospital. Foye is also the first Dartmouth men's basketball player to be named a candidate, let alone a finalist, for the Senior CLASS Award since its inception in 2002.
The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced earlier in the season. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner, and fans are encouraged to submit votes online at the Senior CLASS Award website through March 23. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipients will be announced during the 2020 NCAA Men's Final Four and NCAA Women's Final Four.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
In February, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists, who will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2020 NCAA Men's Final Four this spring.
