HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's tennis team defeated Minnesota by a score of 4-3 at the Boss Tennis Center on Friday evening.
Â
The Gophers, who were runner-up at the Big Ten Tournament last year and made it to the Sweet 16 the season before, dipped to 4-2 while the Big Green improved to 7-0.
Â
"Full credit to Minnesota," head coach
Xander Centenari said. "They pushed us to our limit today. Every single guy was tested. This was a roller coaster match, with momentum swinging back and forth countless times. Toughness for us is the ability to focus on the next most important thing. A lot of toughness was shown today.
Â
"This was a pivotal match for us because we were tested so fully, and some things were revealed and exposed that we can work through this season," Centenari continued. "Matches like these reveal a lot, and we are excited to continue to improve and build on the momentum."
Â
All three doubles matches were kept close, but 6-4 wins by
Casey Ross and
Peter Conklin on court two, and
Pierce Widdecombe and
Anders Gibbons at the No. 3 position gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.
Â
That lead did not last, as Minnesota picked up the first singles victory on court five. Conklin put Dartmouth ahead with his win at the No. 4 position, only to have the Gophers win on courts six and three to take a 3-2 lead.
Â
At the No. 2 position,
Dan Martin won his first set against Vlad Lobak, 6-4, before dropping the next one, 6-1. The junior rebounded to win the third by a score of 6-1 to tie things up at 3-3 and leave it all day to play at the top spot.
Charlie Broom had a 6-4 first-set win over Stefan Milicevic before the Gopher came back to win the next, 7-5. Broom clinched the match with his 7-6(7) win in the third set.
Â
The Green will host St. John's on Saturday to close the weekend. The match is now scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
