NEWRY/RUMFORD, Maine — The Dartmouth men's and women's alpine teams shredded their way to victory for the second straight day at the Bates Carnival as each won the giant slalom to help the Big Green finish up in third place overall. Middlebury broke through to win the carnival by two points over Vermont, 850-848, while Dartmouth completed the two days with 801.
The Big Green enjoyed four podiums in the GS races at Sunday River with sophomore
Andrew Miller and junior
Drew Duffy placing second and third, respectively, in the men's race while sophomore
Abi Jewett and freshman
Gwen Wattenmaker did the same in the women's race.
After the men's first run to start the day, Dartmouth was looking up at a number of skiers in the standings. Miller had a solid run and was sixth while Duffy sat in 13th, 1.3 seconds off the pace set by Vermont's Mathias Tefre. But the duo had the two best times in the afternoon, boosting Miller into second in 2:14.35, a mere 0.05 seconds behind Middlebury's Justin Alkier for the gold as Tefre did not finish his second run. Duffy had the fastest time to vault all the way into third in 2:14.84, 0.11 seconds ahead of another Panther in Erik Arvidsson. Junior
Peter Fucigna also put together two strong times to take comfortably take seventh (2:15.66), bringing the Big Green total to 126 points, edging out Middlebury by six points.
Neither Jewett nor Wattenmaker had to climb the standings as much after the women's first run of the day with the former in third and the latter in sixth. But like their male counterparts, they pushed hard on the second run, posting the two fastest times to finish on the podium. Jewett, who trailed the first-run leader by nearly a full second, made up a lot of ground and produced a combined time of 2:18.88, only 0.29 seconds behind Vermont's Josefine Selvaag. Wattenmaker was the only other skier to break 2:20 (2:19.46) to claim third overall. Senior
Stephanie Lebby was the third scorer for Dartmouth in ninth place (2:21.21), giving the Green 122 points with New Hampshire in second with 108.
Over at Black Mountain, senior
Abby Drach distinguished herself by placing fifth in the women's 5K freestyle, just one second away from stepping on the podium with a time of 13:15.2. Two other Dartmouth skiers made the top 10 in senior
Lauren Jortberg in ninth (13:23.9) and sophomore
Molly Gellert right behind in 10th (13:28.9). The trio totaled 100 points to take third, five behind Vermont, while Middlebury narrowly missed out on sweeping the podium to produce 138 for the win.
In the men's 10K freestyle, freshman
Cameron Wolfe was the Big Green leader in 15th with a time of 24:32.9. Junior
Walker Bean crossed the tape in 20th (24:49.5) with classmate
Adam Glueck not far behind in 23rd (24:56.1). Those three combined to put 72 points on the board, placing sixth as a team as Vermont finished 1-3-4 to win the event with 135 points with Bowdoin and New Hampshire tied for second (96).
Dartmouth will be back in action at the Williams Carnival next weekend with the alpine events at Jiminy Peak and the Nordic events at Lake Placid on Friday and Saturday.
