BOZEMAN, Mont. — Dartmouth junior
Tricia Mangan put together two solid runs to finish the women's giant slalom in fourth place at the NCAA Skiing Championships hosted by Montana State, helping the Big Green finish the first day of competition in seventh place with 71 points. Denver University won both the men's and women's races to conclude the day atop the standings with 172 points, followed by Utah with 152 and Middlebury in third with 115.
By finishing in the top five, Mangan earned a spot on the All-America First Team for the second consecutive year. Last year, the native of Buffalo, New York, placed third in the event.
The men were up first at the Bridger Bowl, and sophomore
Andrew Miller put together a terrific run that left him in fourth place by the end of the morning run with a time of 53.20 seconds, 0.41 seconds off the pace set by Colorado's Filip Forejtek. Junior captain
Drew Duffy was the first Big Green skier to hit the slopes, finishing the course in 54.59 seconds to leave him in 21st place, while senior
Kipling Weisel posted a time of 54.28 seconds, good for 15th.
The women's first run was interrupted by wind twice, the first time for just a few minutes with Mangan waiting at the start, and the second time for about 15 minutes as three skiers could not get to the top of the mountain due to the lift being shut down because of the wind. Mangan managed to brush off the delay and recorded a top-10 time of 56.58 seconds, less than three-quarters of a second behind the leader, Storm Klomhaus of Denver. Junior
Claire Thomas wasn't far behind Mangan in 12th place (56.97) while sophomore
Abi Jewett sat in 26th (58.14).
In the afternoon, Weisel provided the best Big Green time, climbing four spots into 11th with a combined time of 1:48.61, just two-hundredths of a second outside the top 10 and a coveted place on the All-America teams. Duffy was able to move up one place into 20th with a combined time of 1:49.34, but Miller suffered a lost ski and did not finish. Denver's Tobias Kogler beat out Forejtek by 0.02 seconds to take the gold in 1:46.93.
Jewett was up first for the Big Green the second trip down, and she moved up four places into 22nd with an overall time of 1:57.71. Up next was
Claire Thomas, who unfortunately fell and did not complete the course. But Mangan came through with the sixth-best time among the field on the second run, and with three of the top-five entering the afternoon losing a ski, she vaulted into fourth place in 1:54.28, only 0.06 seconds from a spot on the podium. Klomhaus maintained her lead and won the race in 1:53.35, more than half a second ahead of Nellie Rose Talbot from the host school.
The cross country freestyle races will be run on Thursday at the Crosscut Mountain Sports Center beginning at noon (EDT).
