May 28, 2005 — Sean Furey '04 wins javelin for Men's Track & Field at NCAA East Regional
A year after finishing eighth in the javelin at the NCAA Track & Field Championship, Dartmouth's Sean Furey '04 was on a mission to get back and make his mark again.
To get there in 2005, the senior would first have to advance through the East Regional at Randall's Island in New York City. He did so in spectacular fashion.
Furey would finish first in the competition with a Dartmouth-record throw of 241 feet and 9 inches, a mark that still remains atop the program's all-time marks 15 years later. Even more impressive is that his distance remains the school record by nearly 20 feet.
That throw – which came on his fourth attempt of the day – dominated the field of competitors that day as the second-place thrower was 13 feet back of the Big Green's Furey. In doing so, he punched his ticket to the NCAA Championship two weeks later in Sacramento, where he finished third and earned All-America First Team recognition.
