June 11, 2016 — Kaitlin Whitehorn '16 and Dana Giordano '16 earn first-team All-America honors
A pair of Dartmouth women's track & field student-athletes earned All-America First Team honors at the 2016 NCAA Track & Field Championship at Oregon's Hayward Field. Seniors Kaitlin Whitehorn '16 and Dana Giordano '16 both capped their collegiate careers on a high note during the Saturday night of competition at the home track of the Ducks.
Earlier in the evening, Giordano ran a school-record 4:11.86 to finish third in the national final of the 1500m and earn All-American First Team honors. Giordano headed into the final as the top qualifier, but managed to run almost a second and a half better than her time in the semifinal race two days earlier.
Her final race in a Dartmouth uniform was a career highlight that not only eclipsed seven-time NCAA national champion Abbey D'Agostino's previous school record of 4:11.94, but also ranked as the second-best time ever in the event by an Ivy League woman. Giordano finished her career as a three-time Ivy champion in the event and a two-time All-American.
Soon after the completion of the 1500m, it was Whitehorn's time to shine in the high jump as she earned her second career All-America honor in the high jump and first during the outdoor season.
Whitehorn cleared 5-11.5/1.82m on her first attempt and tied Akron's Claudia Garcia Jou for third.
The Big Green senior had a shot at the national title as she and Garcia Jou were the only two individuals to clear the first three heights without a miss. However, Whitehorn was tripped up at 6-feet, three-quarters of an inch (1.85m), taking her out of the running, but allowing her to still retain first-team recognition.
A three-time All-American in the discipline, the native of Huntington, New York, left Hanover as the most decorated high jumper in program history with three All-America honors and six Ivy League titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
