NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Dartmouth sophomore
Katherine Sung sank four birdies and an eagle while carding a 2-under 69 in the final round of the Yale Invitational on Sunday, tying for the low round of the day and finishing third overall in the 66-player field with a 72-72-69—213 (E). Her performance helped the Big Green produce the fourth-best round and climb three places in the final standings into fifth at 51-over par (903).
Boston College took the team title with a 14-over 866 on the 5,972-yard, par-71 Yale Golf Course, 11 strokes ahead of Boston University and host Yale. While Columbia beat out Dartmouth by seven strokes for fourth place, the Green hurdled past Penn (+52), Harvard (+58) and Georgetown (+60) during the final 18 holes.
Sung began her day in strong fashion, dropping a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. Over the next 10 holes, she added nine pars and another birdie to sit at 2-under on the day with the first seven holes to play. That's when her round turned adventurous, bogeying one and two, birdieing three and four, suffering another bogey on five and then sinking her eagle the 349-yard, par-4 sixth. Even with a bogey on her final hole, she matched medalist Nathalie Irbacher of Boston College for the best round of the day with her 69 (-2).
Freshman
Claire Xu put together a 3-over 74 for her final round, leaving her tied for 23rd with a 227 (+14). Her 13 pars were the most of any Big Green golfer on the day, and she added a birdie for good measure.
But Dartmouth did place another player in the top 20 in junior
Samantha Yao as she shot a 77 (+6) today with 11 pars and a birdie. That left her in a tie for 15th with a 12-over 225 for the tournament.
Sophomore
Penelope Tir contributed a 9-over 80 to the team score today with one birdie to her credit, and freshman
Mari Caldwell also competed for the Big Green, recording her first collegiate birdie on her first hole of the day.
Dartmouth will play one final tournament this fall next weekend at the Great River Golf Club hosted by Sacred Heart on Oct. 17-18.
