HANOVER, N.H. — The Ivy League office announced its weekly award winners this afternoon with Dartmouth linebacker Jalen Mackie earning Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Big Green's 38-21 victory at 23rd-ranked New Hampshire on Saturday. This is the second time Mackie has been honored by the league this year.
Mackie, a 6-1, 240-pound senior from Miramar, Florida, led the Dartmouth defense with 10 tackles, nine solo, as the Green kept UNH in check for most of the afternoon. The Wildcats had to figure they would be in for a long day when they drove inside the 5-yard line on its first possession and were denied on the doorstep of the end zone with the last two plays starting inside the 1. The Big Green turned around and drove 99 yards for the first time in 13 years to boost their lead to 14-0, and the defense made sure the lead held up.
For the season, Mackie leads the Ivy League with 41 tackles (8.2 per game) and ranks among the top 10 in tackles for a loss with 4.5 to his credit. He also leads Dartmouth with three quarterback hurries and is one of four players on the roster with an interception.
Earning a spot on the league's honor roll was fifth-year senior quarterback Derek Kyler, who was named the Gold Helmet Award winner by the New England Football Writers Association for completing 18-of-23 passes for a career-high 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Joining Kyler on the honor roll was sophomore wide receiver Paxton Scott who caught four passes for 92 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown with 50 of those yards coming after the catch as he broke four tackles along the way.
Dartmouth (5-0, 2-0 in Ivy League play) returns home this week to host Columbia (4-1, 1-1 Ivy) on Friday, Oct. 22 for a nationally televised game on ESPNU featuring Eric Frede and Jack Ford in the booth at 6 p.m. Big Green fans can also listen to Brett Franklin and Wayne Young calling the action for free through the official website of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com.
Notes: Mackie's first weekly award came after the season opener at Valparaiso when he had 12 tackles and an interception … junior QB Nick Howard also picked up a weekly honor this week as the College Sports Madness Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week for rushing for 96 yards and three touchdowns … the Big Green have had five athletes named a conference player of the week thus far this year, more than any other school in the Ancient Eight.
