NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Sophomore
Katherine Sung shot 1-over par in each of the first two rounds of the Yale Invitational to finish the day tied for seventh, leading the Dartmouth women's golf team to eighth place in the 11-team field on Saturday. Joining Sung in the top 10 was her teammate, junior
Samantha Yao, who had the lowest Big Green round of the day on her second tour (1-under 70) to conclude her day in a tie for 10th with a 6-over 148.
Boston College claimed the top spot on the leaderboard after 36 holes with a 293-280—573 (+5), six strokes ahead of Boston University and seven in front of host Yale. The Big Green, at 35-over par (603), are just three strokes behind sixth-place Georgetown and a single stroke behind Harvard.
Sung's two rounds were about as identical as can be with 13 pars and two birdies each time around the 5,972-yard, par-71 Yale Golf Course. Starting on the eighth hole, she sank her birdies on the par-3 13th and the par-4 second holes during the first 18, then the par-4 12th and par-5 fourth holes during her second round.
Yao, on the other hand, struggled a bit at the outset, making par on a dozen holes with nary a birdie on the other six to shoot a 7-over 78. But she found her groove in the afternoon with 13 pars and a trio of birdies on two par-4s and a par-5 for her 1-under 70.
Freshman
Claire Xu improved five strokes from the first round to the second, producing a 78-73—153 (+11) to tie for 30th. Sophomore
Penelope Tir, meanwhile, put forth a pair of 8-over 79s for the Big Green cause, leaving her in 48th place. Freshman
Mari Caldwell also competed on behalf of the Dartmouth effort.
The Big Green will wrap up the tournament with the third and final round on Sunday, teeing off in the shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.
