PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Dartmouth men's ice hockey team returned to action on Friday evening after a two-week hiatus, falling to Providence, 7-4, on Friday in non-conference action at Schneider Arena.
Â
Dartmouth falls to 2-5-0 on the season.
Â
Sophomore
Nick Unruh, freshman
Steven Townley, and senior
Erik Urbank each scored their first career goals this evening.
Â
Dartmouth came to play as they got on the board inside the first 30 seconds of the opening period. After freshman
Sean Chisholm won the faceoff, junior
Mark Gallant took the puck and fired it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Â
The Big Green added to their lead through senior
Erik Urbank, making his first appearance of the year. Junior
Tanner Palocsik's initial shot was saved but the rebound fell perfectly to Urbank with opening on the left side of the goal for him to tap in.
Â
After forcing a turnover, freshman
Steven Townley smashed it through the legs of the Providence goaltender for his first career goal and to put the Big Green up 3-0.
Â
Providence took a page out of the Dartmouth playbook as they scored three goals during the second frame. Brett Berard grabbed the first goal roughly 90 seconds into the period. Parker Ford cut the deficit to 3-2 midway through the frame, and Guillaume Richard tied things up just two minutes later.
Â
The Friars took the lead midway through the final period as Ford scored his second of the night. Patrick Moynihan forced a turnover in front of the Big Green net and Ford shot it right away to give them the lead. Providence added to their lead just two minutes later when Nick Poisson scored a power play goal after a loose puck in front of net.
Â
With under three minutes remaining, the Big Green pulled senior goaltender
Justin Ferguson in favor of the extra attacker. With the 6v5 advantage, Unruh found himself with a great position in front of goal and was able to get the puck over the line to cut the deficit to 5-4 with just under two minutes remaining.
Â
Looking for the tying goal, Dartmouth elected to play with an empty net. The Friars took advantage and scored two empty net goals in the final minutes to take the victory, 7-4.
Â
Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday for an early evening tilt with twin-state rival Vermont. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and NESN+.
